Missing honeybees and the looming agricultural crisis

bee_6_bg_042404.jpg ”We wouldn’t starve if the mysterious disappearance of bees, dubbed colony collapse disorder, or CCD, decimated hives worldwide. For one thing, wheat, corn, and other grains don’t depend on insect pollination.

But in a honeybee-less world, almonds, blueberries, melons, cranberries, peaches, pumpkins, onions, squash, cucumbers, and scores of other fruits and vegetables would become as pricey as sumptuous old wine. Honeybees also pollinate alfalfa used to feed livestock, so meat and milk would get dearer as well. Ditto for farmed catfish, which are fed alfalfa too.”

CHIC Newsletter - Get Involved!

This announcement is from Matt Satow, student editor of the soon-to-be launched CHIC newsletter.

Attention CHIC students:

The new CHIC newsletter will begin production soon and we are currently looking for students to fill staff positions.  If you have an interest in writing, a love of food and an inquisitive mind, this is the perfect opportunity to get your voice out to the students and staff.

Respondents of a recent survey have voiced interest in a variety of topics including, but not limited to: restaurant reviews, book reviews, recipes, Chef/student profiles, and information about all of the interesting things constantly going on at CHIC that few of us ever get the chance to hear about.  The students and staff have come up with some great ideas about how to fill this newsletter with entertaining content, but at this stage the possibilities are practically limitless; even the name has yet to be established.  As a member of this staff you will get the rare opportunity to help shape a newsletter from the ground up, leaving your mark on a publication that will hopefully be a fixture of this school for many years to come.

Those interested should send writing samples, contact info, and questions to mattsatow@aol.com no later than Friday (8/17).  Submissions should preferably be culinary/baking related, however, due to the short notice of this announcement, any sample that demonstrates a student’s ability to write will be accepted. We hope to hear from you soon!

Bread Guild - Sunday @ 1

tarpit_22_bg_081101.jpgJoin Chef Tom and his merry band of bakers this Sunday, August 12, for pizza making and eating. I have it on good authority that the bread guild rocks out for three hours and that the pizza meeting is the most popular of the year.

See you in the bakeshop!

Candy Everybody Wants.

Please know that we take your feedback seriously and will act on it to improve our services. Thank you for taking time to complete our survey.
