eBooks experiment

Posted by chiclibrary on 2008/01/30

The next time you search the CHIC online catalog, you may see results for electronic records. I am starting to catalog eBooks from CECybrary so that they show up along with the regular books on our shelves.  eBooks are fully digitized versions of print books. They can be viewed and printed within copyright guidelines.

Unfortunately, because we have to log in to use CECybrary, I can’t make the eBooks accessible with one click.  If you find an eBook you want to view, you must first log in to CECybrary before clicking the link in the online catalog. Or, you can go to CECybrary and search for the book by title.

Along the same lines, I will start to catalog web sites that relate specifically to classes and assignments here at CHIC. These resources are accessible by one click – just look for the URL in the record.

New Scandinavian Cooking

Posted by chiclibrary on 2008/01/24

scan.gifI have mentioned here before that I am a scandinaviaphile.

Sadly, I have not yet visited any of the nordic countries.  I get a weekly glimpse of my future trips every Sunday afternoon. I watch New Scandinavian Cooking on PBS (WYCC, channel 20, 3:30 p.m.).

The series began with two seasons in Norway hosted by Andreas Viestad, moved on to Sweden with Tina Nordström, back to Norway for the 4th season, and the current season features Claus Meyer in Denmark.

The companion website has recipes, chef bios, travel information, and more.

5 Random Books

Posted by chiclibrary on 2008/01/22

j0409270.jpgLibraryThing is an online service that allows anyone to catalog and share their books online. I am experimenting with LibraryThing here at CHIC to see how it might be useful to us. For now, our LibraryThing account has a small assortment of titles added to our collection in the last few months.

Check it out at LibraryThing, username: chiclibrary, password: library.

Research help

Posted by chiclibrary on 2008/01/18

remyemile.jpgI’ve been in a lot of classrooms these days, talking about research.

We all do research every day, to find the information we want and need: songs on iTunes, statistics to support fantasy sports competition, friends on MySpace and Facebook. The thing is that there is really no difference between that “research” and the research you do for school.

So the next time you sit down to write a paper, remember that finding that information works the same way as finding movie times or sports scores. The search strategy is the same. You know how to do it.

For more tips, check out the LRC’s research web site CHIC Library: Mise en Place.

Learn a new language with Rosetta Stone

Posted by chiclibrary on 2008/01/11

paris_brasserie.jpgThe LRC now offers Rosetta Stone.

Learn French or Spanish now!

This computerized language program is based on auditory, visual and written identification. Through vocabulary identification and reinforcement, grammatical points are progressively introduced through small sentences.

It is a slow-paced vocabulary based approach that uses reinforcement as a key tool and provides a nice variation from the traditional methods to learning foreign languages. You will not go through the painful process of learning endless lists of conjugations and grammatical rules. The vocabulary is put in context to help you master those more grammatical points and verbs almost despite yourself.

If interested, please contact Karine Bravais-Slyman to get registered: 312-873-2001 or kslyman@chicnet.org

Once setup, you can work independently whenever you have some free time. Karine will follow your progress, offer written assignments patterning to the different levels you are completing on the computer and give you tests and exams for assessment.
