On December 13, Scandinavians celebrate Luciadagen, or Sankta Lucia’s Day. St. Lucy is a symbol of light and hope in the dark Scandinavian winter.
I celebrated this year with lussekatter (saffron buns called “lucy cats”), coffee, and aquavit cocktails.
Skål!

So I have this obsession interest in Scandinavia and Norway in particular.
Many of you also know that I studied baking before I became a citizen of libraryland.
Here is the result of those combined interests – this is a kransekake, the traditional Norwegian ring cake for celebrations of all kinds. I baked this one for a julebord, or Christmas table.
God Jul – as you probably guessed – means Merry Christmas.

Found this via random Googling…
Turns out we have a young museum devoted to the culinary arts in Chicago and beyond. The Hall of Fame currently includes Charlie Trotter, Jimmy Bannos, and Rick Bayless. The web site lists upcoming exhibits in the “Museum’s public spaces” but there is no address or contact information to indicate where those spaces might be. Stay tuned …
