Urban reality

Posted by chiclibrary on 2009/03/23

We’ve all heard some version of the urban legend where a customer requests the recipe for Neiman-Marcus chocolate chip cookies and gets the recipe along with a bill for $250.00.  In revenge, said customer then distributes the recipe to everyone she knows to get her $250.00 worth out of old Neiman-Marcus.

With the help of TimeOut Chicago, you can replicate some of Chicago’s best restaurant recipes.  The Hopleaf’s Belgian-style mussels, Avec’s chorizo-stuffed bacon-wrapped dates, L2O’s pain au lait …  Take that Neiman-Marcus!

Learn Italian

Posted by chiclibrary on 2009/03/10

italy_flag_smallThe library offers students the opportunity to learn French or Spanish using our Rosetta Stone software.

But what if you want to learn another language? The good news is that there are many opportunities to study languages using free, online programs.  In the coming weeks, I will feature different languages and resources for learning on your own.

First up – Italian:

BBC Languages – Italian
Audio and video courses with exercises, grammar tips, and more.

Live Mocha – Italian
Live Mocha is an online language learning community. As you take a course, you submit exercises for review by native speakers. You can also friend other learners and practice via live chat.

My Daily Phrase – Italian
100 3-5 minute lessons; aimed at tourists who want to use the language in a practical way

Oggi e Domani
Interactive online Italian course. Please note that this site is currently unavailable from campus computers.

Buona fortuna!
